When Queen were invited to be 46664 ambassadors and appear at the first Nelson Mandela Concert for Aids in Cape Town, they called upon the help of their keyboard player and musical director Spike Edney to provide MD services and organize a house band to back the stellar line-up of featured artists. Since that memorable occasion, Spike and his House Band have supported 46664 in both Tromsø and Johannesburg.

The fight against HIV/AIDS is more than a fight against a virus or disease.

AIDS has been labelled a black disease, a gay disease, a poor disease or a whore’s disease. In short, one of the biggest challenges has been to overcome the stigma that surrounds it. It’s a stigma that kills because people are afraid to get tested, afraid to get treated, afraid to find support and/or afraid to reveal their status.

It is this stigma that prompted Nelson Mandela, the founder of 46664, to state: “AIDS is not a disease; it’s a human rights issue.”

Madiba’s outspokenness about HIV/AIDS has led HIVPlusMag.com to vote him one of its top “10 Allies We’re Grateful for in the Fight Against HIV”.
