Musician and former anti-apartheid activist Vusi Mahlasela will be taking the United States by storm this year.

The South African-born singer, songwriter and 46664 ambassador will be touring the States, spreading the message of change, hope, reconciliation and renewal while raising awareness of HIV/AIDS.

Manager Ann Kingston says Vusi will be touring with Bela Fleck an American banjo player and his own band. The tour started at the colonial Theatre in Pitsfield on March 26 and ends at Macky auditorium in Boulder on April 17.

Also known as the “Voice of Mamelodi” because of his extraordinary vocal gift, Mahlasela works hard for the benefit of others.

He is the founder of the Vusi Mahlasela Music Development Foundation (VMMDF), which aims to develop the musical potential of underprivileged township children and to promote and preserve African music.

Being a 46664 ambassador is another flag Mahlasela carries with pride. He was invited by Nelson Mandela to be an ambassador and says he represents the campaign wherever he goes.

“I am deeply honoured to have been asked to carry on Mr Mandela’s message through my music and through international touring.”

Mahlasela says he promotes 46664’s message of awareness about the HIV/AIDS pandemic in all his concerts.

He also works with the Acumen Fund, a non-governmental venture that uses entrepreneurial approaches to solve the problems of global poverty.

Mahlasela was recently featured in a documentary on Playing for Change, a musical foundation that is dedicated to creating peace and connection in the world through music.

His whole life has been filled with music. He began singing as a young boy in Mamelodi township outside Pretoria, where he was raised by his mother on her own.

He used a tin and fishing line to make his first guitar at the age of seven. His formal guitar lessons began in high school, where he put together his own vocal group.

During the apartheid years, Mahlasela went out on the township streets, chanting protest songs with other activists.

He sings in all of South Africa’s official languages, and says there’s something profound about speaking to someone in their own language.

“If you learn to speak another language, you learn more about those people. You get to understand them, to know more their culture and to love them.”

Pulling in major international celebrities and corporations, the 46664 campaign kicked off in October 2003 with a ground-breaking music launch on the internet and phone networks around the world, followed by an all-star concert in South Africa in November 2003.

That was only the start of the 46664 campaign. Global online petitioning and donations continue on the 46664 website, and the DVD and CDs of the 46664 Cape Town concert are on sale worldwide.

Speaking at the US launch of the 46664 DVD/CDs in April 2004, Nelson Mandela Foudation chief executive John Samuel described 46664 as a "long-term music-based campaign" that, besides raising awareness and funds to fight Aids, "aims to be the largest call to action for Aids in history, so that governments around the world are aware of the strength and impact when the public act."

Funds raised are used by the Nelson Mandela Foundation to initiate, develop and support practical programmes for the prevention, testing, care and support for those infected and affected by HIV/Aids in Southern Africa.

"Thirty million people in Africa are currently imprisoned by the HIV virus, a death sentence among the poor due to lack of affordable medicines. Since the start of the pandemic two decades ago, 17 million Africans have died."

Mandela, speaking at the 15th International Aids Conference in Bangkok just days before his 86th birthday on 18 July 2004, said the 46664 campaign would continue to create global awareness of HIV/Aids, to advocate for and support HIV/Aids care, treatment and prevention, and to raise the funds urgently needed to fight the epidemic.

It would also continue to pressurise governments and other agencies to meet their responsibilities, Mandela said, but added: "We cannot leave this matter only to governments and others. We must ask ourselves the question: What can I do as a global citizen?

"In a world that is divided along many lines, we now have a unique opportunity to bring us all together around a common challenge", Mandela said. "In ensuring that the millions of people who are infected and affected by HIV and Aids are not forgotten, we will not only make a difference to their lives, we will also make a difference to our lives as well. We owe this at least to humanity."

Speaking at the 14th International Aids Conference in Paris in 2003, Mandela said that a "tragedy of unprecedented proportions" was unfolding in Africa.

"Aids today in Africa is claiming more lives than the sum total of all wars, famines and floods and the ravages of such deadly diseases as malaria ... We must act now for the sake of the world ... Aids is no longer a disease, it is a human rights issue."

In the 25 years since HIV AIDS was first identified as a disease, over 65 million people have become infected and over 25 million people have died of AIDS related causes.

One of the saddest consequences of the disease is its impact on children. To put this in perspective, in Swaziland one in four households is headed by a child whose parents have died of AIDS. Sadly, there are already 14 million AIDS orphans in the world today. This is largely due to the fact that women are not only biologically more at risk than men but are also subject to high levels of sexual violence because of their inferior social status. Young women and adolescent girls are a high-risk category, but so are sex workers, injecting drug users and men who have sex with men.

The spread of the disease is worsened by the realities of economic injustice, gender inequalities, homophobia and prostitution. These underlying social causes make HIV AIDS such a complex disease. All these factors have created taboos and stigmas that have to be challenged in order that HIV AIDS is "normalised" as a disease in order for it to be treated more effectively at all levels.

The situation is already serious but if infection rates continue to escalate, the disease could pose a long term threat to human society.

Aimed at an abusive apartheid regime, which undermined the rights of the majority of South Africans, Gimme Hope Joanna prayed for a brighter future for all in this country.

But while the 46664 ambassador is glad that he can finally “have a relationship with [his] fans” in South Africa, after boycotting touring the country during the apartheid era, he is extremely concerned about the state of the world.

“I’m worried about the greed that permeates this world at the moment,” says the eloquent star, “and it’s manifest in the current economic crisis.

“This greed causes aberrations: shortened life-spans, abusive and exploitative systems, to name just two.”

Father of four children, some of whom, in turn, have their own children, Grant is concerned that his “progeny will be sucked up in this concrete jungle”.

Not least of his concerns is HIV.

“It’s the disease of our time,” he says. “We need to understand how this pernicious disease works. Anyone can get HIV. It’s not a disease that is specific to any one group of people. Everyone needs to care about, think about, speak about and do something about HIV.”

Grant believes that world bodies and governments are not doing nearly enough to combat the spread of the virus.

“Our children are our future, and they are the group who are most at risk. If we are looking to continue, if we are looking to build, we will need these children. They are the roots of our society and the root is going to die unless we do something about this disease.”

Married for over 40 years to the same “incredible woman”, Grant says that he was never tempted to stray despite his international fame.

“It was never difficult for me,” he laughs. “I made a deal with God very early on and I’ve always looked after myself.

“I expect miracles from my body and you can’t expect the maximum from a mechanism that you don’t look after.”

Grant has performed in Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town and appears at Sun City on Saturday February 28.

“It’s been a wonderful tour,” he says. “When I walked out on stage in Durban [his first show in South Africa] I couldn’t believe how many people were there. It was pouring with rain and yet people just stood there, no one moved.

“We had the most marvellous, beautiful relationship and it was the same everywhere else I’ve been.”

Performing at the Hyde Park concert in June last year as a 46664 ambassador marked Grant’s first show in 20 years.

“It happened beautifully,” he says. “I was thinking of doing Glastonbury and some of the other festivals around England when I got invited to play. It was amazing to be part of the celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life.”
